A new exciting wait begins among Dune fans, as it has been announced that Dune 3 is officially in development. This third movie, with Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair, was announced after the huge success of Dune 2.
Dune 3 potential cast, release date and more
Dune 2 surpassed the success of the first movie, grossing over $600 million at the box office, paving the way for a third movie. As confirmed by production company Legendary, the third movie is in development with Denis Villeneuve directing. Dune 3 will be based on Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah novel by Frank Herbert.
“There is definitely a desire for a third movie, but I don’t want to rush it,” Villeneuve said. “The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality,” he added. The director noted that Messiah will probably be the last movie in the franchise.
Details about the movie are not yet known, but actors such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh and Josh Brolin are expected to return. Anya Taylor-Joy is also likely to appear in the movie as Alia Atreides.
The potential release date for Dune 3 has not yet been officially announced, but it may not be as soon as expected. Dune Messiah takes place 12 years after the original book. “I want to do the second part as fast as possible, then I’ll wait a few years,” Villeneuve said in March 2022.
If Dune 2 had been released on its original date, there would have been 2 years between it and the first movie. Considering the 5-month delay, 2026 seems like a possible release date for Dune 3.
